The History

The Keen Building, located at 2207 20th Street in Nanton, Alberta, holds a significant place in the town's history. Constructed in 1927 by Dr. William H. Keen, this three-story brick structure originally functioned as a private hospital, addressing the community's need for local medical facilities. hermis.alberta.ca

Establishment of the Hospital
Prior to the hospital's establishment, residents requiring hospitalization had to travel to High River or Calgary. Recognizing this challenge, Dr. Keen, alongside Dr. James Creighton, provided medical services from their offices. In 1927, Dr. Keen took the initiative to build a modern hospital on Railway Avenue (now 20th Street). The facility accommodated 12 patients and featured its own dispensary. The Nanton News described it as "modern throughout" with "the most up-to-date electrical equipment in the province for the treatment of disease." Amenities included two bathrooms, a kitchen, a sunroom, and an electric pump water system. hermis.alberta.ca+1canadaehx.com+1

Operation and Transition
Dr. Keen operated the hospital with assistance from his wife, Edith, a graduate of St. Joseph’s Hospital in London, Ontario, and Miss Adams, a graduate of Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary. Following Dr. Keen's passing in 1937, Dr. Hector Mackenzie took over in 1938, with Edith briefly leading the local Red Cross branch from the hospital premises. The hospital ceased operations in 1940 when Dr. Mackenzie enlisted for military service and Dr. Creighton retired. Subsequently, the building was converted into an apartment block, with the ground floor serving various commercial purposes over the years. canadaehx.com+3hermis.alberta.ca+3vintagewings.ca+3

Historical Significance
The Keen Building stands as a testament to Nanton's commitment to community welfare and development. It reflects the dedication of early medical practitioners like Drs. Keen and Creighton, who were integral to both healthcare and local politics. Today, the building remains one of several landmarks on Railway Avenue, symbolizing the town's rich history and resilience. hermis.alberta.ca

Incorporating the Keen Building's storied past into Main Street Suites Nanton not only preserves its historical essence but also offers guests a unique connection to the town's heritage, enhancing their overall experience.
